Programmers, artists & educators
unite to create educational software in the “Education Got Hacked!” hackathon

Participants created functional prototypes, under free software licenses, available, free of cost, for: use, modification and redistribution.

Education Got Hacked! was produced by Engine-4 & Intel Corporation, in collaboration with WWT, Imaginary Sense, the Office of the CIO of Puerto Rico and other sponsors. The event took place Friday, November 30th through Sunday, December 2nd of 2018, at Engine-4 Coworking Space, Bayamón.

Impact / Change / Improve the education of K-12 students by developing educational software that will be distributed on Intel NUCs Intel Corporation will be donating to schools in Puerto Rico.


To develop free software solutions that satisfy schools’, teachers’ and students’ needs. Selected solutions will be distributed through schools in Puerto Rico and submitted for distribution on Linux repositories.


  • Teams may consist from one to five members.
  • At least 80% of the code / design must be written and developed during hackathon hours.
  • For your software to qualify, it must be published under the Apache 2, BSD 2-Clause, BSD 3-Clause, GPLv2, GPLv3, MIT, The Unlicense, or any other authorized license.
  • The use of “opensource” libraries is allowed as long as it is compatible with the license under which the software is being published.

Categories in which you compete for NUC7i3

  • Science
  • Mathematics
  • Computer Science
  • Natural Languages (English, Spanish and so forth)
  • All educational video games can also compete for the previous categories.
  • The project that wins the Best Video Game special category will win NUCs model NUC8i7 instead.

Challenge #1: Electrically charged particle simulator

  • Simulate charged particles
  • That move across two mediums the user selects
  • Each medium corresponds to different atom models

Challenge #2: Chemical reaction simulator

  • Allow students to mix chemicals
  • Allow them to apply heat, stir and sit still
  • Students are free to experiment
  • Students can be quizzed to classify the resulting reactions as: endothermic or exothermic, oxidation and other kinds of reactions
